Furniture, Cabinets or Walls
Not only are our materials, water-based, and environmentally friendly, but you can paint on almost any surface imaginable thanks to our Caromal Colours Basecoat and Wall Sealer. Not only do you have so many choices in finishes, but these finishes may be applied to almost anything!
For example, several years ago Al & I built a reproduction Pennsylvania farmhouse on a shoestring budget. It was so successful that when people come to our home, they consistently ask us how old our home is - thinking surely it is about 100 years old. We never could have pulled it off if it weren’t for our painted finishes.
Here are a few of the things we did with painted finishes:
- Changed brass to aged iron…with two coats of Basecoat.
Stained and distressed new wood to look like old floorboards.
Gave distressed character to plain old wood to create chair rail, crown mold and baseboard.
Changed all new drywall to look like plaster walls.
Created custom period lighting.
Changed the color of our exisiting furniture (so we could save some money and not have to buy new stuff that looked out of place).
Painted and distressed kitchen cabinets that were new and unpainted.
Stenciled back stairs, bathrooms and accent pieces.
Transformed wooden dowels into custom curtain rods.
Created bars and countertops out of planks of wood.
We basically put a finish on everything that didn’t move….no wonder we were exhausted!
Your home can be transformed with painted finishes. Don't limit yourself by thinking that faux finishes only apply to walls.
Start with the cabinets...
Our students and clients alike are thrilled when we tell them we can change cabinetry in their home or the homes of their clients. Because of Caromal Colours® Basecoat, our finishes will stick to almost all previously finished surfaces:
- Pre-finished oak cabinets can get a country french look with a Parchment or Wisteria Distressing Kit.
- Dark cherry family room built-ins can get a softer look with a Cobblestone or Mustard Distressing Kit.
Old maple kitchen cabinets can get a fresh traditional look with a Peppercorn, Putty or Chocolate Distressing Kit.
Once the surface is clean, oil free and dry, any of our finishes can be applied if these surfaces get Caromal Colours® Basecoat, Caromal Colours® Textured Basecoat or Caromal Colours® Wall Sealer applied first.
Furniture can be a fun, whimsical, substantial part of design with no sanding or stripping...
When it comes to furniture, the sky is the limit. Gold or silver leaf can be a gorgeous finish to consider as a splash of glamour. Stencils can create the feeling of hand-painting. You can save an old piece, customize a new find, or add age or character to any piece in your home.
Don't forget the accessories or architectural elements...Consider some of these options:
- Gilded columns, accessories, frames, mirrors, table place settings or holiday elements, such as ornaments for the tree!
- Toner over anything painted that needs to be 'toned down'.
- Stencil stair risers, moldings, create a theme party by stenciling placemats, napkin holders, flower pots and table runners.
- Paint a faux floor cloth or stair runner.Use leftover gold or silver leaf to stencil designs on presents or packaging.Distressed moldings, newly acquired accent pieces or any accessory that needs charm and warmth.
About the walls...without adding texture...
Wall Glazing has never been as beautiful or easy as it is with a Caromal Colours® Glazy Days Kit. If you follow our directions and seal any color of your favorite house paint with Caromal Colours® Wall Sealer, you will have a wonderful glazing experience. Wall glazing is fun if the material stays wet so you can leisurely achieve a beautiful finish. Common house paint glazes dry quickly, don't move around the surface well and are heavy and opaque when finished.
Caromal Colours® glazes are translucent, light and are designed to enhance your chosen wall color - not cover it up or change it completely.
If you have ever wiped a surface, like clea ing a top or dusting anything, then you can glaze a wall. With our materials it is just that easy!
About the walls...adding texture...
Caromal Colours® Classic Plaster finishes will add warmth, texture and character to your walls without making the surface so thick you can never change them. When people look at the Classic Plaster samples they covet the look they see. These finishes make you wish you could do every wall in the house as though drywall never existed. (I did every wall in my house!) When people feel the Classic Plaster samples, they love the finish even more. It looks very thick and textured and feels smooth to the touch. To make a change years down the road, you can just roll paint right over it sanding or not sanding first. Like all of our finishes, there are so many variations of these finishes. People ask us if you can paint over the plaster. The answer is yes you can...but once it is applied we bet you won't want to!
